Childrens Ministry

It is too laborious to trace the origin of the Children’s Ministry in HLC(E), JB. The kids have been there since time immemorial … no? Well, it sure feels that way. The kids have always been there except some have taken a larger form by now, after some 20 over years since my initial involvement in this ministry. These have produced miniatures of themselves. As they keep coming, I ask myself to what ends and through what means should this new generation be led? The temptation is to take them through the paths we took their parents through. I was then timely reminded by an fb post that Elder Dr. Alex Tang recently shared. He quoted Heraclitus, in Plato, Cratylus: ‘Everything flows and stays. You can’t step twice into the same river’. My thoughts inadvertently drifted to Joshua 3:3,4. The Lord was giving instructions through the Israelites’ camp officers just before they were to cross the River Jordan to enter into the land promised to them: “When you see the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.”

God has plans, new plans for our kids that are different from the plans He has for us. He doesn’t want two generations to step twice into the same river. He wants our children to follow Jesus (represented by the Ark) and to follow the people of the new covenant (represented by the priests) for they have never been this way before. I suspect some of us, the adults, also have not been this way before. It is a way that is Life, not plunder; it is a way that only kids understand. My hope and aspiration for the Children Ministry in the year 2012 is that may we hear with our heart what the Spirit is saying to the church even though it offends the mind. The kids are seldom offended in that way. God bless. They embrace freely the things of God. That’s why to these, belong the kingdom of heaven. Let us not come in the way of the kids, between the move of the Spirit and the obedience of faith. After all, the promised land flows with milk and honey and is a good land indeed.
