Boy’s Brigade

1st Johor Bahru Company was officially enrolled on 4 November 1956 under the wings of The Singapore Battalion who helped form the Company. The founding Captain was Mr Michael Ang who was assisted Rev. Richard Shad as Chaplain, and Mr Joseph Victor and Mr Tony Joyce as Officers.

In 1965, the Company struggled without a Captain. It was a critical moment in the life of the Company. However, we are thankful to S/Sgt Yap Yok Foo and S/Sgt Ong Eng Boon from the 1st Kluang Company. In 1966, Mr. Paul Juby and Mr. Gan Yan Guan from 1st Sungei Petani Company were transferred to Johor Bahru and they assumed the positions of Captain and Officer respectively. Total commitment and dedication from these both men had helped nurture the Company. Many new ideas and systems were introduced.

Many boys too found Jesus as their Saviour during the late 1960s. Mr Paul Juby showed his qualities as a fine and dedicated leader. He sent weekly personal letters to all Boys in the Company and had also created the “BB pews” in the church during church Services on Sunday. In 1967, a Bugle Band was formed. Tow instructors from the British army stationed in Johor Bahru taught the Boys. A year later, the band took courage to take part in the National Band Competition. We emerged Fifth out of the six bands in our first attempt. Bagpipes were introduced in 1971.

When Mr. Paul Juby left for England in 1974, the captaincy was taken over by Mr. Michael Moorthy. Mr. Michael Moorthy is now the BB Malaysia President while Mr Jason Chong has taken over from him as the new Captain of the Company.
